‘Breathe While You Can’ Poster

This horror-themed poster was a part of a college social campaign targeting the issue of “throwaway culture,” which we defined as a hyper-disposable aspect of consumer life in modern day America. Essentially this poster makes a statement about the eventual self-harming danger that humanity puts itself in as a result of throwing away too much plastic.

Each of our posters were displayed as an exhibition called “Un-Sustainable: A Design for Good Poster Exhibition,” which took place at the following locations and times:

November 1 - 30 at Art Center

December 6 at KSpace Contemporary Spectacular Salon

December 6 - 21 at KSpace Contemporary

The Process

Starting out, the concept was to take an emaciated human figure and have them being sickened, afflicted by, or harmed by garbage, giving everything a bit of a dystopian/apocalyptic edge. The “bag over the head” man was selected as the final concept, and then after some photographic references were taken, the painterly illustration was done in CSP. The figure was given a sickly greenish hue to the skin to really make him look poisoned, and it contrasted well with the red text of the statement, “Breathe While You Can.”

Overall, a very fun project, always great to use illustration.
