Milk & Soup Packaging Duo
Overview
This college packaging project is themed around two very juxtaposed products and target audiences. One is a cutesy, feminine, Sanrio-esque coffee creamer, and the other is a manly, meaty, microwaveable soup. The dichotomy between the two was a very fun and interesting concept to execute throughout the project.

Coffee is a very popular drink with most people, but is incredibly popular with young, introverted women. There is a specific subsection of these young women in the overarching nerd culture that really have a thing for the Sanrio brand as well as cutesy, pink, “kawaii culture.” The concept behind this product was a milk/creamer coffee additive that appeals to the feminine kawaii culture, even featuring a cute cat mascot. The main typeface Vanilla was used as a sort of westernized way to emulate “marui ji,” one of the popular “cute writing” styles of kawaii. Soft pastel colors were also selected to heighten the cute innocent look of the brand.
(Fun fact: During the final class presentation, when this design was revealed, the classroom erupted in many “awwww”s)
Big Mike’s Meat N’ Chili Process
Inspired by manly meal brands like Mega Meats and Chunky Soup, this canned chili product sits as the masculine counterpart to the previous product. With this can design, the intention was to show a real visceral photographic approach to the food, which hopefully would inspire hunger when looked upon. This is combined with strong use of reds, oranges, browns, and other “hunger colors.” Simple instructions with emphasized cook times allow for quick reading or no reading (something I personally admit to doing when it comes to cooking). A flannel background pattern also lends itself to that hairy-chested manly lumberjack aesthetic.
